Obituary

Dr. John Asa Lewis Campbell was born on April 9, 1938 in Petrolia, Pennsylvania to Asa Lewis Campbell and Betty A. King. John grew up in Brookfield, Ohio and Butler, Pennsylvania. He was a 1956 graduate from Brookfield High School. He attended Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in the College of Chemistry and Physics. He went on to obtain his Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Mineral Processing. He was a member of the social fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma and two honorary fraternities, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi. John was an active member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and served on a number of Church Committees including the building of Zion Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City. He served as President and Chairman of the Board Lutheran Senior Citizens for 23 years and was instrumental in building Concordia Life Care Community in Oklahoma City. John retired from Kerr McGee Corporation in 1994 as Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services. From 1994 to 2000 he founded and ran a successful consulting company, Retam II Technologies. He also served as an Adjunct Professor and taught mathematics at Rose State University. John was awarded a number of patents, published innumerable papers, gave countless speeches, and was a member or chair of numerous professional societies and University committees. Among others, he developed two technologies that positively impact mankind on a world basis: the Campbell Flooded Bed Scrubber System' that controls respirable dust on underground continuous miner sections and the car reader system' that identifies individual railroad cars and is required by most national railroad systems. The universal adoption of the Campbell Flooded Bed Scrubber System markedly reduced the prevalence of black lung' in underground miners resulting in life saving safety changes for miners. The car reader system' is used daily in efficient travel for commuters nation wide on most of America's turnpikes. John enjoyed reading, writing books, watercolor painting, dancing, playing bridge, telling stories before audiences, and writing letters to the editor. His family and childhood friends were very important to him. John is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Campbell, Oklahoma City; four grown children, Ann Kristine Boisvert and husband Mike San Diego, CA, John A. Lease Campbell and wife Sharon, Tulsa, OK, Donalei Kelly Erdman, Austin, TX and Famie King Thompson and husband Brent, Pauls Valley, OK; and eleven grandchildren. Viewing will be Tuesday, March 31 from 8am-9pm at Mercer-Adams in Bethany. Services will be held Wednesday, April 1 at 2:00pm at Zion Lutheran Church.
