Dorothy Jean Wyskup was born May 26, 1929, in Mill Creek, Oklahoma, to Tom and Georgia (Orr) Tucker. She entered into eternal life July 16, 2018, in Oklahoma City. She was a fighter and tough from the beginning.
She had beautiful auburn hair and lots of freckles. Her parents taught that all you need in life is love and family.
At age 4 while recovering from chicken pox, she awoke one morning paralyzed, only able to blink her eyelids. She was treated for polio, and because of the love and devotion of her family, she learned to walk and talk again.
Her older sisters were marrying as she was growing up, and she loved their husbands and appreciated all they did for her.
She became an aunt before her 3rd birthday, giving her and her siblings even more playmates.
She attended school in Mill Creek, Russett and Wynnewood.
In the early 1950s, she moved to Oklahoma City and lived with her older sister Winnie. She was especially grateful to Winnie for all she taught her and her generosity in providing her a home.
She was working at Clyserol Laboratory when her friend Virginia Boydston introduced her to a tall, handsome man named Frank Wyskup one night at Kotche's. They were married a few months later on February 15, 1958, in the home of Toni and Charles Belsky, Frank's sister and brother-in-law. Frank moved her to his family farm north of Harrah. She was astonished to find out there wasn't phone service in rural Oklahoma County.
Dorothy loved being a wife, but she was looking forward to motherhood. She became a mother in 1959 when Donna was born. Several miscarriages followed, and they decided being a family of three was perfect.
She was homeroom mother at Russell Babb Elementary every year and was involved in PTA. She rode those yellow buses while fighting motion sickness on numerous school and band trips until Donna graduated.
She attended Mass regularly with Frank and Donna. After observing Frank dedicated to his faith, she was inspired to learn more and was baptized Catholic April 28, 1962, at St. Teresa Catholic Church. She was active in church activities and belonged to the Altar Society. For a few years, she was responsible for planning funeral dinners and was famous at church for her chocolate cake and potato salad. She regularly turned a five pound bag of potatoes into potato salad for 25. She frequently attended daily Mass. She was very proud to be named Woman of Achievement by the ladies at St. Teresa's in 1987.
She was widowed in 1992. The next year her, friend Betty Batt invited her to join her and Bob at a senior citizens' dance. Her love of dancing was rekindled and she danced two to four times a week for many years at senior functions. She made new friends and enjoyed her life. She again showed her resiliency when she remained in her home after being robbed and tied up at knifepoint. She downsized from the last house she and Frank had built and moved to her final house on Gold Street in Harrah.
When Chinh became Donna's foster child in 2001, Dorothy was excited to become "Nana!" She and Chinh shared a love of dancing. In 2003, Dorothy moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to Donna and Chinh. She first lived at Trinity Gardens and moved to St. Ann Retirement Center in 2012. She loved living at St. Ann's because she could attend Mass in the same building where she lived. She was sad to leave there when her failing health required her to move in 2016.
Dorothy loved being a mother and she found her "church children" at St. Teresa's: Marilyn and Joe Tytanic, Kristi and Doug Kretchmar, Kathy Small and Steve and Dede Scalzo. Their relationships continued even after Dorothy moved from Harrah.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her siblings, Monnie and Silas Kirby, Reba and Ralph Harris, Winnie and Wally Burgess, Veta and Bob Clark, Frieda Tucker, Edith and E.W. Thorn, and Tom and June Tucker; and by nephews, Sam Kirby, Paul Tucker and Ralph Harris, Jr. and nieces, Jean Clausen, Patti Thorn and Connie Woodward.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Donna; sister, Neomia Tucker; granddaughter; Chinh Doan; in-laws, Marty and Jo Wyskup, Louise Wyskup, Anna Mae Wyskup and Laura Mae Crain; as well as seven Tucker and 11 Wyskup nieces and nephews.
She had a special place in her heart for Chinh's mom, Tu Tran and Donna's dear friends, Norma and Bryan Ballard.
The family appreciates the care given by many aides and nurses and is especially grateful to Estella Stevenson.
They're also appreciative of Laverne Lippen for her weekly calls and greeting cards, which brightened Dorothy's day.
