Dorothy May Homer was born March 4, 1929, in Hollis, Oklahoma, the first child of Cason "Bill" Homer and Nettie May Homer. She eventually had three brothers, Raymond "Buddy," Johnny, and Leon, and a sister, Doris. Before long, the family moved to Bethany, Oklahoma. Dorothy graduated from Bethany High School in 1947. She attended Bethany-Peniel College until 1950.
Early in 1952, Dorothy went to Wichita to visit her old friend, Norma, who had moved to Wichita with her husband, Leon. While Dorothy was there, she met Leons handsome musician friend, Wilbur "Web" Tipton. They immediately fell for each other and married on October 6, 1952.
After marrying, Dorothy and Web moved to Wichita. While living in Kansas, they had four children: Debbie, Cliff, Janice, and Lori. Cliff was particularly quick to pick up the music bug, first taking up the drums at only three years old, and eventually playing many other instruments as well. Not long after, Lori joined in, playing drums in Webs band. Dorothy loved having a house full of music, and welcomed the many friends who came to play along and to listen.
Dorothy became a beloved figure in their neighborhood. Even today, people who grew up in the neighborhood fondly remember Dorothy as one of the most caring people they ever knew. Her home was a place where everyone was welcomed and cared for, always.
In 1970, the Tipton family moved back to Bethany. Dorothy loved to garden and planted beautiful flowers around their new home. She enjoyed sitting on the porch or looking through the window to see birds and butterflies enjoy her flowers.
Her greatest pleasure remained listening to music made by her family. She was always Webs number one fan, and enjoyed seeing him play guitar and sing with his Western Swing band. Sadly, in 1987, Dorothys life was forever changed when Cliff and his son Dallas were killed in a plane crash. She missed them dearly, but she never lost her loving, gracious, and compassionate spirit.
Despite the great loss, Dorothys family continued to grow, and she showed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the same love, kindness and support that everyone who knew her recognized as simply who she was. On May 25, 2016, she passed away in her sleep at the age of 87. She was a very special person, and she will be deeply missed.
