Obituary

Dorothy Ruth (Osburn) Harris passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on August 31, 2022. A celebration of Dorothys life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Mercer-Adams in Bethany, OK with a visitation 1 hour before and a viewing on Friday September 9, 2022. Interment will be in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. Dorothy was born November 24, 1936 to Flora Ella (Newsom) and Lester Hubert Osburn in Waterproof, Louisiana. She was raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (OKC) until her Junior year in High School when her family relocated to California. She graduated from Pasadena City High School and attended college at Pasadena City College which was on the same campus. She was the Queen of Altadena in the New Years Day 1955 Parade of Roses. On July 7, 1956 she married her husband of almost 52 years, Melvin Leon Harris, in Oklahoma City. They met at their best friends wedding the year before and had a long-distance courtship. Leon and Dorothy raised their family in Oklahoma City, Enid, and Tulsa before returning to Oklahoma City where Dorothy lived 39 years before moving to Ames, Iowa to live with her daughter last Fall. Dorothy was a Broker/Realtor in Tulsa and OKC during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was an avid reader who dreamed of being an author. She had a generous heart and was loved by all who met her. Dorothy never spoke poorly of anyone, always finding good in people. She is survived by her sisters, Effie Jay Ray of OKC, Freddie Mae (Patrick) Muldoon of Glendora, CA; her sons, Christopher Mark (Deanna) Harris of OKC, Lance Arlen (Melinda) Harris of Edmond, OK; daughter, Cheryl Diane Carlile of Ames, IA; grandchildren, Abigail (Millie Tanner), Summer, William and James Harris, and Benjamin and John Carlile; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Samson. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Jeffrey Wade Harris; husband, Leon; parents; stepfather, Wilbur Clinton Brown; sisters, Helen Faye Hampton and Nina Bea Hill; and son-in-law, Danny Dean Carlile. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Israel Family Hospice House, St Jude Childrens Research Hospital, or Operation Smile in Dorothys name. .
