In faithful submission to the gentle calling of God, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Colbert traversed from this earthly existence to be with her heavenly father on March 7, 2016, in her home. She was born in Shamrock, Texas on December 20, 1928, to Alonzo Sr. and Azzie Lee Franklin. Her parents and all her siblings have preceded her in death except a brother Don Cubit.
Dorothy was raised in Ada, Oklahoma and attended Napier School. On March 7, 1948, she was united in Holy Matrimony to her late loving husband, Manuel Colbert, Jr., and to this union was born four children. Preceding her in death was her firstborn, Larry James Colbert and precious grandson, Tobias Jamal Colbert.
Mrs. Colbert was a devout Christian. Her spiritual journey began at Philemon Baptist Church in Ada, Oklahoma. She was a long time member of Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Hobbs, New Mexico. When she returned to Oklahoma in 1991, Dorothy became a member of Cathedral of Praise aka The Gate.
Our Mother and grandmother was sweet, kind and a gentle person, who never had an unkind word to say about anyone but had a special way of saying things to let you know she meant business. She loved family gatherings and her door was opened to everyone.
Since Dorothy had a nurturing spirit, she realized late in life that God had a specific calling for her. She obtained her LPN nursing degree in Oklahoma in 1966 and her RN nursing degree in Texas in 1976. She worked at numerous hospitals and with home health until her retirement.
Her favorite pastimes were reading her bible, collecting cookbooks, political debates, keeping up with the latest technologies and babysitting her great grandchildren.
Many precious memories of her life and love have been implanted in the hearts and minds of her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memories three devoted children, Kathy (Msgt. Henry) Chandler, Craig Colbert, and Julia Colbert; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren; many special friends; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Sunday, 11am-9pm, with family present from 3-5pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Monday, March 14, 11:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Ada, OK.
