Obituary

Doris Eryn (Waggoner) Vaughan Wilmoth, 90, of Bethany, Oklahoma, passed away November 20th, 2017. Services will be held Monday, November 27th at 2:00 p.m. at the Mercer- Adams Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, November 26th from 2:00-4:00 pm at Mercer-Adams. Doris was born August 21, 1927 to Eryn (McCown) and Alfred L. Waggoner in San Antonio, Texas. There she attended school, graduating from Thomas Edison High School where she played clarinet in the marching and concert bands. Her love of piano began as a young girl. As her talent progressed she won numerous awards while studying with accomplished pianist Frank Stine. In 1944, Doris moved to Oklahoma to attend Bethany Peniel College (Southern Nazarene University), graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance degree. Doris continued her piano studies at the University of Texas, the Eastman School of Music, New York, and Piano Pedagogy classes at Oklahoma City University. She participated in a myriad of piano workshops and master classes with world renowned pianists throughout the years. Doris taught at Bethany Peniel College for five years and then, in the 1950s, she started her own private music studio at her home in Bethany that continued for more than 40 years. Several of her students received full scholarships to universities to study piano and one student participated in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. She was selected as a Finalist in the talent audition, playing a Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto. Other students went on to rewarding careers of their own in music after studying with her. Doris was a member of the American College of Musicians, Music Teachers National Association, and the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. In 1969, she was honored with the National Piano Guild Hall of Fame Award. As an adjudicator for the National Guild of Piano Teachers she traveled extensively each summer to states across the nation. She had a remarkable and rewarding career. Doris met Fred Vaughan in college and they were married in 1947 until his death in 1994. She was his champion and supporter as he built a successful insurance business and law practice, eventually serving as Bethanys Mayor and later the Municipal Judge. After Freds passing she married Dean Wilmoth. They spent many years together traveling to foreign countries, vacationing in Florida during the winters, and spending many weeks each year exploring the antique stores in the Midwest and East Coast, filling their home with many antiques. Dean passed away last year at the age of 89. Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, J. T. Waggoner, husband, Fred Vaughan and husband, Dean Wilmoth, Doris leaves behind one stepson, Larry Wilmoth, stepdaughter, Lindy Mahaffey, and nephew, J.T. Waggoner of San Antonio, TX. The family and friends of Doris would like to thank Kenneth and Sherry Armstrong for their guidance, support and love through the years.
