Obituary

Doris was born November 16, 1922 in the small town of Yale, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Gibbs Porter; her parents; and 5 sisters, Pauline Scott, Lorene Cobb, Lavenia Boyd, Leta Roberts and Dorothy Bills. She is survived by two nephews, James Cobb and James McGehee; 4 nieces, Christine Fincher, Donna Karen Nelson, Diana Sue Steeley, Cathy Saunders, and their families. Doris attended and graduated from Central High School, Blackwood College and Comptometer school, earning a degree in commercial accounting. While working at Armour Meat Packing Co., she met the love of her life, Richard Gibbs Porter. It was love at first sight and after a short courtship, Doris and Port were married on August 28, 1942. They were married over 49 years. Doris was never blessed with children of her own but had a special place in her heart for her nephews and nieces. Following the death of her niece, Frankie Jean, through a shared lonliness, she and Denny developed a close relationship. Denny called Doris every day and they would talk for 1-1 1/2 hours. These calls were the highlight of her day. Doris enjoyed gardening, her flowers and playing golf. She was a hard worker, very dedicated in everything she did. She saw many changes in her life ~ advances in the medial field such as penicillin and other medications which were unheard of when she was a child. Inventions that would affect every aspect of her life. She lived through WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the War in Afghanistan. She witnessed the invention of radio broadcasts, TV, Cable TV, Satellite, Computers, IPads, IPhones and smart phones. She has seen men traveling into space and landing on the moon. Having been raised during the dust bowl days and the Great Depression, she was very frugal. Over the last several years, life became more and more difficult. She was getting weaker, was having trouble walking but was very independent. Her strong will and determination to stay in her apartment carried her through some rough times. She was able to remain in her apartment until about 3 1/2 weeks ago. She was getting tired of life here and began talking more often about wanting to die, go to Heaven and live with Jesus. That wish came true for her in the early morning hours of March 1, 2014 when she peacefully died in her sleep.
