Donald Loyd Kliewer was born in Cordell, OK on October 7, 1932. He was the 5th of 6 children born to Bertha and Theodore Kliewer. The family lived in Cordell for a number of years where Theodore ran a cream station. When Don was in 4th grade, they moved to a farm northeast of Cordell. They continued to live on the farm for many years even though Theodore was always quite ill due to the rheumatic fever he had contracted as a young man. Theodore died in 1950.
In 1955, Don was drafted into the military. He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy with the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. After the service, Don moved to Lincoln, NE and began working at a Safeway store. It was there in Lincoln that he pursued the love of his life, Edna, and they were married in 1958. Their first son, Michael was born in Lincoln in 1959. Don was transferred to Oklahoma City in 1960. Their second son, Gregory was born in OKC in 1961. Don later became a USDA meat inspector. He didnt always enjoy his work, but worked hard to provide for his family. He retired at age 62.
Don was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed life and people. There were many happy days with the family boating and camping at lakes, camping in Colorado and, when the boys got a little older, the competitive game of golf. He enjoyed meeting and talking to people, always maintained a group of close friends and was always available to help those in need.
Don loved the Lord and He was Dons strength. He always felt he had been greatly blessed. He had become a Christian at an early age when Theodore Epp had revival meetings in Cordell. Dons love for the Lord showed in his daily walk and actions. He instilled the importance of church and the Bible to his children and was an active member at Metropolitan Baptist Church for over 50 years. As the difficulties of life increased, he had peace and frequently expressed his readiness to meet his Lord and Savior.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Kliewer; and siblings, Eldon Kliewer, Esther Kliewer, Elvira Schmidt and Harold Kliewer. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edna Kliewer; Michaels wife, Cathy; son, Gregory (Stacia) Kliewer; their children, Kristen (James) Baird, Kaitlin (Griffin) Radford and Caleb (Ashton) Kliewer; and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Elmer (Sally) Kliewer.
