Obituary

Dixie Lou Shilling of Norman died on March 24, 2023, just shy of her 80th birthday, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Oklahoma City. Dixie was born April 3, 1943, in Bartlesville to Richard Carson and Lula Langwell Carson. She attended Bartlesville Public Schools, graduating from College High School in 1961. She attended Oklahoma State University, studying elementary education, and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority. While at OSU, Dixie met Leslie Shilling, a fellow Cowboy studying hotel and restaurant management. The couple was married in 1964 in Bartlesville and made their first home in Oklahoma City. Dixie assisted Les at JR Chicken Ranch, the Shilling familys popular Oklahoma City restaurant. The couple had two children, a son, Jeff, and a daughter, Amy. Dixie spent time working for Putman City Schools where she was a beloved library assistant. After Les suffered a stroke in 1995, Dixie returned to school to become a respiratory therapist. In 1997, she began work at Deaconess Hospital and later worked for hospitals in Elk City and Clinton. She retired in 2014 and moved to Norman to be near her children and grandchildren. Dixie enjoyed shopping for antiques, exercise classes, bible study and time with family and friends. She was renowned for her pie making skills. She attended church in Norman at McFarlin United Methodist Church and the First Christian Church of Norman. Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, Les, in 2016; her parents; brothers, Joe Carson and Norman Carson; and a sister, Karen Smith. She is survived by her son, Jeff, of Yukon; daughter, Amy Moakley and husband, Bill, of Norman; granddaughter, Anna Mueller of Oklahoma City; and grandsons, Drew Ediger, of Moore, and Brady Moakley, of Norman. A celebration of Dixies life was held at Legends restaurant in Norman on April 8, where family and friends gathered to celebrate her love, laughter, and grace.
