Derrick passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the age of 45. While his family and friends mourn their loss, they are comforted in knowing that he is now at peace with his Heavenly Father. Derrick Shane Bird was born to Beverly and Jim Bird on May 7, 1969, in Oklahoma City. Derrick graduated from Putnam City West High School in 1987. He then graduated from the University of Oklahoma and ultimately earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law. Derrick spent some time studying abroad and when he entered into the legal profession, enjoyed working for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and doing legal research for various law firms. Derrick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, watching OU football, and cooking, preferably all at the same time. He had a kind and gentle spirit as well as a witty sense of humor and an infectious laugh and was loved by many. Derrick was preceded in death by his father, Jim Bird, maternal grandparents, Richard and Thelma Schaffer and paternal grandparents, Archie Bird and Joy Klein, his aunt Jackie and uncle Jim Browning, and cousin Aaron Spradlin. Derrick is survived by his mother, Beverly Bird, sister, Tiffany Kenny and husband Forest Kenny, sister, Jimmie Lynn Gabel and husband Stan Gabel, niece, Brooke Gabel, nephews, Thomas, Jack, and Sonny Gabel, his uncle Phillip Bird, aunt Kim and uncle Jimmy Boone, aunt Jeannine and uncle Buddy Simpson, and numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held at Mercer Adams Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at 4:30pm. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, and Wednesday, April 22, 2015.
