David Dickinson, 58, passed away June 21, 2019. He was born November 22, 1960 to LaDonna (Collett) Harris in Oklahoma City, OK. As a young boy he was adopted by Donald Dickinson who loved him as if he was his own. David was a caring little boy who enjoyed playing outdoors. While living in Oklahoma he met his lifelong friend, Rod Smith, in 3rd grade in Mrs. Hippuns class. While his dad was in the Air Force, David had the opportunity to travel and live in various places in the U.S. After traveling, they settled in Oklahoma City where he attended Putnam City Schools and graduated in 1978 from Putnam City West. David and Rod, had many adventures including chasing cars, women and beer! After graduation, he was a cook at Western Sizzlin, where he learned to master the art of grilling steaks and hash browns. He enlisted in the Navy in 1980 and served honorably through 1984. During his service, he earned top pistol marksmanship. After the Navy he began his career in aviation specializing in jet propulsion in Irving, Texas. He met the love of his life, Iris, and his future daughter, Lucia, on July 4th, 1990. David and Iris were married on November 7th, 1992 and from this blessed union came their second daughter, Natalie, in 1993. David moved back to Oklahoma with his family in mid-1995 after accepting his position as an aircraft mechanic at Tinker Air Force Base, where he spent the rest of his career.
He was devoted to his best friend, his "memore" Iris. Every morning he would tell her "good morning beautiful" and text her "I love you, drive carefully." David found and fixed up four jeeps for Iris to use at work. He was a mechanical wizard who could make anything work. He always made sure the jeeps were gassed up, had their oil changed, and good tire pressure. He loved to take Iris on long motorcycle rides and go on fun spur of the moment trips together to Sulphur, Talimena, Washita Mountains, and Davis. David and Iris had a playful relationship and the love they shared was very apparent. They were the definition of a partnership. He told her in one of his last texts "Thank you for loving me. I had a happy life because of you."
As a father, David was dependable, generous, and served as the family peacekeeper. He had a vast array of knowledge, from the finer points of fielding a softball, to re-engineering any vehicle. He taught his growing daughters the importance of self-reliance and independence, many practical life skills, and spurred their growth in education. He attended all their many extracurricular activities (cheer, dance, and softball) and supported their scholastic endeavors. He was very proud that they both graduated from college debt free. He reminded Lucia and Natalie that they were his greatest accomplishments.
David was loving and compassionate, unwaveringly loyal, dependable, and an exceptional provider. He was a rock to many and extraordinary patriarch for both his immediate and extended family, always willing to put his family before himself. He made a point of calling regularly to stay in touch and was always willing to help anyone who needed it.
An avid outdoorsman, David loved to hunt, fish, camp and boat with his family and friends; he could field dress a deer in minutes. He loved to tell tales about his many adventures, typically accompanied with a beer in hand.
He had an infectious smile, gentle blue eyes, joke for any occasion, loved to play practical jokes, and he could snore a house down! He will be missed tremendously by his "girls" and the newest member of the family "Kodi."
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Danny Hyde and Darryl Dickinson, and sister, DeAnna Hyde. He is survived by his loving wife, Iris; daughters, Lucia & Natalie Dickinson (fiance, Nathan Anders); aunt, Pat Kutej; step mother, Kathy Dickinson; mother in law, Orbelina De Campos; lifelong friend, Rod Smith & wife Marsha, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends. He is also survived by a pack of spoiled fur grandbabies, Bella, KeKe, and Xena. Viewing will be Thursday, June 27 & Friday, June 28, 8am-9pm (family present from 5-8pm on Friday). Services will be Saturday, June 29, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel, Bethany, OK with burial immediately following at Bethany Cemetery.
As many of you know, Davids favorite holiday is right around the corner. He has been prepping and clearing the land for weeks for the arrival of our annual 4th of July party. David wanted to celebrate big this year on June 29th with all of his family and friends by his side. After the burial we invite ALL to come share stories, relax, and to remember David in true David form. Come eat, drink, and pop some fireworks. Lets make it the best party yet!
