Darlene, age 84, went to be with her Lord, August 9, 2016, with family at her side. Born June 11, 1932 to Ernest and Opal (Kissire) Buckles of Mound City, Missouri, as the middle child of thirteen. She and each of her siblings were born at home. She attended school in Holt County, Missouri, at its one-room, one-teacher school house until eighth grade. At the age of sixteen, she graduated from Mound City High School, where she lettered in volleyball and basketball, and played snare drum in the band. She made salutatorian of her graduating class and attended Girls State. After receiving a $40.00 scholarship to Bethany Peniel College (SNU), she left for college. While at BPC (SNU) she met and fell in love with Laverne Davis, a piano player from OKC. They married August 24, 1950 and lived in Bethany and Oklahoma City area for 46 years. They raised two children, daughter, Verna and son, Kenneth.
The first part of married life she was a stay-at-home mother. She was secretary for NW District Church of Nazarene, for Meridian Park Nazarene Church, for Psychology Dept. at BNC (SNU) and several associate pastors at Bethany First Church. When she worked for "Bro. Sam" Stearman at BFC, she and Laverne became good friends with Sam and B.Kaye and were active through Bethany First Church as staff at NIROGA retreats for senior adults in Glorieta, NM. As helpers with Bro. Sam and B.Kaye, they took many bus trips across the U.S., which provided life-long friendships and memories.
Darlene and Laverne established Davis Temperature Controls in 1976 and ran their company until Lavernes death from cancer in 1996. On August 1, 1997, she married Elbert Overholt and enjoyed 13 years of reading, traveling to his cabin in Colorado and several memorable trips. They were active in Association of Senior Professionals at SNU, Association of Retired Ministers, and the Reach Out Sunday School class at Bethany First Church of Nazarene. Elbert died in 2010.
Darlene was a huge, whooping, hollering fan of Thunder and OU basketball teams. An avid reader, she was reading a book two days before she died. She enjoyed Bible studies, needlework, painting, growing plants, playing games, and cooking for her clan. As Grandma and "G-Gma," the visits from hers & Elberts children, grandkids and "greats" were highlights. After giving her life to Christ at the age of 12, she knew she was soon to be Heaven-bound when she received the cancer diagnosis, April 2016. Some of her last words were, "God is good!"
Darlene is survived by her two children, Verna Brown and husband Ken, Kenneth Davis and wife Patty; sister, Donna Thompson; brother, Larry Buckles and wife Nora of St. Joseph, MO; sister, Connie Mayfield and husband Ken; grandchildren, Ken Brown, Jr. and wife Carla, Ashley Tidmore and fianc Brandon Fulbright, Travis Johnson, and Jessica Davis; great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Mason Brown, Avery and Cole Cunningham, Aiden, Archer, and Samantha Tidmore and Lucinda Locke; step-children, Randy and wife Cindy Overholt, Ed and wife Bettie Lou Overholt, Jan Witzke and husband Ron; grandchildren, Mike Overholt, Ryan Overholt and wife Shelley, Eric Overholt and wife Dedra, Sean Overholt and wife Sue, David Overholt and wife Michelle, Drew Overholt and wife Jo, Corrie Graybill and husband Alden, Aaron Witzke and wife Deanne, Michaela Simpson and husband Judge; great-grandchildren, Lily Overholt, Luke, Gabe and Maranda Overholt, Rachel and Sam Overholt, Elise and Edison Overholt, Wesley Graybill and Liliana Simpson.
Just as she was the "babysitter" for her six younger siblings, she took loving care of her children, husbands and all the "grands" and "greats" that she could. Everyone knew her as a witness of the sweet, sweet Spirit of the Lord. She was greatly loved and will be missed by those blessed to have known her as family or friend.
Friends and family visitation is Friday, August 12, from 6 to 8 pm at Mercer Adams Funeral Service. Graveside service is Saturday, August 13 at 2 pm at Bethany Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to Bethany First Church of the Nazarenes After-School Program, address 6789 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.
