Dale Ward Johnson, 81, of Yukon, OK, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on January 27th, 2019. He was born August 30th, 1937 in Port Aransas, TX, the only son of Ray and Edna Faye Johnson.
His educational and professional work began when he graduated from Northeast High School, in OKC, in 1953. He then attended the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner) and later OCU, where in 1961 he received a geology degree. Early on he worked as a mud logger in OK, KS, and TX oil fields, and then joined Oklahoma Science and Arts Foundation as a lecturer, becoming the Director of The Kirkpatrick Planetarium in 1964. Dale was then hired as the Director of Learning Resources at South Oklahoma City Community College in 1972, the Colleges inaugural year. He returned to the field of geology in 1979, working with several companies as an Exploration Manager. In 1986 he took a job in hydrogeology, and in 1996 Dale moved into his final professional role with the Oklahoma State Department of Environmental Quality, as a Senior Ground Water Geologist, working with that team for 18 years.
As a family man, Dale married Janet Sitton of OKC in 1964, with whom he then shared over 54 years of love and companionship. Dale raised three (3) children with Jan ~ Daryl, Carrie and Christopher, all without permanently damaging any of them (likely a miracle, as we deserved worse). Dale has 2 daughters-in-law, Barbara Johnson and Doris Johnson, and six (6) grandchildren, Cory and Christine Poteet, Vaughn and Alana Johnson, and Danielle and Erica Luchessi.
Dale had many hobbies including the love of working on classic cars, playing guitar and music appreciation, creating art, and traveling to Europe and Israel. Dale also completed an autobiography in 2015, titled "Mostly the Truth." For those interested, copies will be available at the memorial service. He had numerous beloved friends, including Steve Mattocks (oil industry) and Butch Middleton (church), meeting them often for lunch to tell tall tales and occasionally outright lies!
In 1967, Dale and family joined St. Marks United Methodist Church, where he participated in almost every committee through the years and taught Sunday School and Bible study class until Dec. of 2017. The memorial service for Dale will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 2 at St. Marks Methodist Church, 8140 N.W. 36th St., Bethany, OK. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 8701 N.W. Expressway, OKC. God bless the memory of Dale Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, Dale requested donations to be made to St. Marks UMC Missions Fund at the above address.
