Obituary

Dale Ellsworth Cook August 4, 1941- May 30, 2023 Dale Ellsworth Cook was born to Bryce and Naomi Cook in Dodge City, Kansas on August 4, 1941. He passed away May 30, 2023, in Hydro, Oklahoma. His name Ellsworth came from his mothers brother, Uncle Ernest Ellsworth. Ironically, Dale looked like his Uncle Ernest Ellsworth. When World War II ended, Dales father, with a call to preach, moved his family to Bethany to study at Bethany Peniel College. Upon graduation his pastoral ministry took the Cook family to churches in Sharon, OK (close to Woodward, OK), Richland, OK (near Yukon, OK), Laverne, OK, Oakley, KS, Hydro, OK, and Corsicana, TX. When his dad contracted walking pneumonia the family moved to Dallas. In Dallas, Dale worked for Goodwill sorting donations and general custodial details. When he failed to come home from work one day the Dallas police went looking for him. He eventually recognized a church steeple and found his way home from there. Dale never understood how money works. He knew what the different coins were, but not their value. When he shopped, he handed the clerk money and waited for the clerk to give him correct change. He never grasped the concept of time. If someone was coming for him at night, he would be ready in the morning. He learned to cook for himself. His modus operands was to take frozen food out of the refrigerator and put it in the microwave oven. His way of getting along in life is understandable in knowing he was in school eleven or twelve years before special education was offered. He was promoted all the way to high school, but never graduated. Dale was a lover of people. He was quiet, but very sociable. Everybody knew him. He had a passion for sending cards to family and friends. It was a given that his sister Merrietta would supply him with weekly stamps to keep the tradition going. He loved calling people on the phone. Dale's hobby was collecting baseball cards, miniature cars, and keychains from his travels. The extensive collection of keychains grew with additions from friends travels as well. Dale had a personal Christian faith. He made sure he was baptized. In fact, he was baptized twice. Once as a Nazarene, and once as a Baptist. For awhile he was a church greeter with a greeter pin on his lapel. He wore those pins the rest of his life and is wearing them forever in death. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Lauren Leroy Cook. Survivors include his sisters, Merrietta Miller from Hydro, OK, and Lynette Cook of OKC; niece, Janelle Zabel, and husband Randy Zabel; three great nephews, Ryan Zabel and fianc Lauren Aprile, Colby Zabel, and Shane Zabel.
