Obituary

Christian Edgar Kaufman, Jr., M.D. passed away on November 27, 2019 at home in Panama City, FL after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease. Chris was born March 3, 1940 in Washington, DC to Christian Edgar and Ruth May (Hauser) Kaufman. He grew up in Ocean City, MD. The family moved to Winthrop, MA before his senior year of high school. Chris attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA and graduated from Univ. of Massachusetts (Amherst) in 1962. He married Nancy L. Thorn in Old Deerfield, MA in August 1962. They went to Miami, FL where Chris entered graduate school in Marine Fisheries at University of Miami. After a year he decided that doctoring on people rather than fish was more to his liking and that is how they arrived in Oklahoma City. Chris graduated from University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in 1967. He was a member of the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He was a veteran who served in the Public Health Service in Staten Island, NY. for two years before returning to OK to complete his residency and fellowship training at OU Medical Center. Afterward he stayed on in the Department of Medicine as faculty. He really loved the teaching aspect of his medical career and has had many local doctors come up and say he was a great teacher and was always ready to help with medical advice and information. Chris co-authored several medical research articles and edited a book on medical pathology. When he retired in 2001, he was Chief of the Nephrology Section. Chris was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed many hours sailing, kayaking, camping or any other outdoor activity. Over the years he loved doing activities and trips with his family and friends. Chris was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, (David Frederick Kaufman). He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Christian Erick Kaufman, M.D., Stuart Thorn Kaufman, and Melissa Laidlaw Kaufman Hemker (Eric); grandchildren, Christina Maria Kaufman, Andrew Christian Hemker, Sophia Alexandra Hemker, and Jack William Hemker; sister, Carole Ann Kaufman of Las Vegas, NV; and several nieces, cousins, and their families. There will be a celebration of Chris life at 2pm on Dec. 14, 2019 at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany, OK. Private interment will be at a later date in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Deerfield, MA.
