Charles Martin Roberts, Ph.D., 72, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014. He was born on February 5, 1942 in Muskogee, OK to the late Charles J. and Agnes (Leonard) Roberts. He received his doctorate degree in Chemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Oklahoma. He was passionate his entire life about learning and teaching. As a teenager in Muskogee he taught chess at the Carnegie Library. During his time at the OU Medical Center he did eye research and established an electrophysiology research lab while assisting Dr. Tom Acers in the development and design of the Dean McGee Eye Institute. His formal teaching career began when he taught a class of OU Medical School Ophthalmology residents in the early 1970's and ended as a visiting Chemistry Professor at OSU. But the zenith of this teaching career was the time he spent at Oklahoma School of Science and Math. Chuck was a Chemistry Professor there in its early years and was instrumental in organizing a rigorous and comprehensive chemistry curriculum. He was a coach for OSSM students wishing to participate in the annual International Chemistry Olympiad and from 1994 to 2002 led 11 students to be United States National Team Qualifiers. From his retirement until the death of his mother in 2013, he devoted himself fully to being a medical "guardian angel" to 6 family members. His tender loving care and attention to medical details was a blessing to all of us and we will dearly miss his leadership, integrity, wittiness, his fun loving spirit and his hugs. We know he is continuing his intellectual journey and hope he is enjoying some serious cloud time where he can ask all the questions he had about the mysteries of the universe. Chuck enjoyed membership in Sports Car Club of America, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the American Chemical Society and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Survivors include his wife, Lesslie; son, Charles Roberts and wife Rachel; daughter, Erin R. Culley and husband Thad; sister, Julia R. Krehbiel and husband John; an aunt, Verna Fletcher; an uncle, Leo Donaghe; 7 grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his dear friends, Don and Cleo Short. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Forest Hill Christian Church, 2121 N. MacArthur, OKC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to The Charles Roberts Chemistry Award, Oklahoma School of Science and Math, 1141 N. Lincoln Blvd., OKC, OK 73104.
