Charleen Gibson Harlan, age 87, departed this world Feb. 12, 2018 after a lifetime of entertaining and helping others, especially children and those who were down on their luck.
She was born Oct. 18, 1930 in Westville, OK, grew up in Dade City, FL and met her husband James Dansby Harlan at Northeastern Oklahoma State College in Tahlequah. After marrying Dan on Nov. 6, 1951, she packed up and re-settled her family every two years, often managing the household alone when he was at sea. In 1968, the family retired from military service and relocated to Bethany, OK.
Charleen loved family, friends, jewelry, coffee, donuts and cigarettes, which she quit in 2006 (except for occasional car rides with accomplices). She enjoyed afternoon naps, garage sales, dancing with Dan, TV reruns and reading newspapers cover to cover. She fed possums on her back porch, volunteered when she wanted to, wrote hilarious Christmas letters and picked stock market winners. She took revenge on her daughters by spoiling her grandsons. Christmas was her favorite holiday. She did not care much for cooking, pioneered holiday dinner takeout and maintained a slim figure without exercise, which she detested.
She was smart. She was kind. She made other people laugh and treated them fairly. In later years, Charleens independent streak became a solid color, which enabled her to outlive most of her generation in spite of health issues. She is survived by daughters Colata "Jody" Harlan and husband Tim Wagner, and Tracee Symes and husband Darrell; brother Dr. Gilbert C. Gibson and wife Aulena; grandsons, Colin Wagner and Ryan Symes; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewing will be Thursday, 9am-9pm with family present from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams, 3925 N. Asbury in Bethany. Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 16, 10am at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
