Obituary

Catherine D. Bruner-McCurley, 81, was born in Portsmith, Virginia on July 23, 1942, the youngest of 6 siblings, to Wendell McElhenie and Katherine Wilson-McElhenie of Norfolk, Virginia. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Cathys father, Wendell, passed when she was very young. Her family grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. Her "mamma" house backed up to Oceanview beach. This was her backyard and playground while she was growing up with her siblings and best friends, the Netherland girls, causing mischief, of course. Cathy met her first love at the age of 15, James W. Bruner, who was in the Navy. They married on June 14, 1959 in Norfolk, VA and moved back and forth during the child- bearing years to Texas, Virginia and Oklahoma. Eventually, they settled back in Oklahoma City because James was offered a job at Western Electric and bought the family home to raise their family, where they stayed until they grew up and moved out and began their independence. Cathy had 3 children: Russell, Darryl and Cheryl. She stayed home with her children to love, care and raise them to be happy, healthy, strong-willed, independent and able to thrive for themselves. She loved her children with all of her heart and they were her life and her blessing. Cathy began working at Western Electric as layout operator on March 21, 1966. She was always busy, raising her children and working full-time, keeping her family unit intact. Weekends were spent around the house and at various lakes around Oklahoma with family and friends. They enjoyed boating, skiing, swimming and even a drag boat. As the years went by, boys will be boys and even Cheryl was a tomboy. The kids learned to tinker and fix everything they could get their hands on, including several different cars and motorcycles to have fun with. Cathy made a lifelong memories with the kids growing up, especially wonderful lake memories. She was always having fun and being spunky and ornery. Oh boy, she had some looks that would stop you in your tracks. You knew you were in trouble if she used your first and middle name look out! She meant business, but always with love and compassion. Cathy divorced James in 1989. She continued working until she retired in 2001 after 35 years of service with Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent. What an accomplishment! She started dating her "on & off again" 2nd love, Lewis McCurley in 1991. Her life began to change when she became a Christian in 2003. Even though God has always been there, He dramatically started doing His work and transformation began, changing the outlook of the rest of her life. Cathy was very loving, giving and helped wherever she could and was very active in church activities. She was the fixer and a giver! Floral arranging was her gift and she took charge of decorations for the church altar. She even helped make decorations for friends weddings, birthdays, etc. Around 2006, Cathy went back to work part-time at Interlink Diagnostics as a courier until Lewis proposed. They were married January 23, 2011. Their dream was to retire to Lake Eufaula and so they did. They enjoyed the slower paced lake life at Sandy Bass Bay #2 for 5 years. Lewis & Cathy cooked together often and they were known for their Cajun Cabbage. They also made canned goods to give to family and friends. When they came into town they would always bring something to give someone, giving of their love. Cathy also volunteered at the Texanna Road ladies auxiliary for awhile, making arts and crafts for the store to be sold. Lewis and Cathy loved taking road trips, searching for adventures around the area just to see what they could find. Darryl had moved in with Cathy and Lewis to heal from one of the many accidents he had. She escorted him to and from many doctors appointments. She was still caring for her children later in life. Darryl began to notice small signs of something wrong, but she would say she was fine. When Lewis's health began to decline, they all moved back to Oklahoma City and Darryl became the caregiver for both Lewis and Cathy. Lewis eventually passed on March 16, 2018. Cathy was diagnosed with dementia in September of 2018 and her life was never the same. The oh-so-long goodbye began. Cheryl moved in with Cathy to help out in 2020. Although she was still working full-time, she was able to help and give Darryl a break. Cathy enjoyed outings with Cheryl on the weekends. She would get on her scooter and would go 4-wheeling in crowds of people. They had a good ole time being silly and laughed until they cried. People would ask, "Are you OK?" She responded, "fine as frog hair" and people would laugh. She was having a good day. Indeed she was! She still attended church on Sundays when she could. This past year, Cathy became bedfast and passed away on September 17 due to the disease. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Donald Ray McElhenie, Allen McElhenie, Roland McElhenie, Thayme Morrow and Geraldine Guynn. She is survived by her 3 children, Russell Bruner of Newcastle, OK, Darryl Bruner of Oklahoma City and Cheryl Peredetto of Oklahoma City; 4 grandchildren, Justin (Heather) Farris of Porter, OK, Travis Bruner, Dillon (Kristin) Bruner of Oklahoma City, Mykel (Michelle) Peredetto of Newalla, OK; 9 great-grandchildren, Carley Bruner, Mason Farris, Audrie Haile, J.J. Farris, Ali Farris, Jaiden Peredetto, Keeli Peredetto, Raelynn Peredetto and Emmett Peredetto; and multiple nieces, uncles and cousins in Virginia that were so far away but so near and dear to her heart. In addition to her family and friends, Cathy loved all her 4-legged babies through the years. There are too many to mention, but the last group were Tramper, Ginger, Molly, Daisy, Boomer and Sarge.
