Obituary

Carroll Swickey died July 2, 2011. He was born May 13, 1930 to Melvin and Mary Retta Carroll Swickey in Paden, OK. Carroll is survived by his wife, Donna and sons Brad, Chris, Mike and Mark Swickey. His grandchildren are Michael, CJ, Amanda, Caleb, Josh, Jacob, Zach, Sayword, Dacia, Jeremy, Levi, Jessie and Josiah. He also has four great-grandchildren. He had great pride in all his children and grandchildren. Perhaps a bit of extra pride, in that he was the last of the Swickeys and saw three such fine generations of progeny to carry on the name. Carroll graduated from Classen High School in 1947. He was editor of The Classen Life, national award winning school paper, and a state champion in track. At the University of Oklahoma, he was a conference champion in track and an Air Force ROTC officer, starting training as a pilot just nine days after his 1951 graduation and commissioning. Since he had worked on F-80 jet fighters at Lockheed Aircraft, Burbank, CA in 1947, he became one of the few, and possibly the only person, to fly military missions in jet fighters he helped build. After the Korean War he worked at OU lobbying the state legislature. In 1954, he decided to be a professional and never missed doing some lobbying every session for forty years. He served on state agencies, commissions and committees for nine Governors. His company was Swickey and Associates, Legislative and Government Consultants. Both his Oklahoma and Washington lobbying were for conservative causes and organizations. Though perhaps best known for Right to Work, the causes nearest his heart, always represented pro-bono, were handicapped concerns, highway safety (particularly drivers education), mental health and ethics in government. He served as officer of many local, state and national organizations. Carroll was a 65+ year member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church, though some years he worked on membership and evangelism for smaller Methodist churches. Carrolls wish was to forego any funeral or memorial service. Instead, he asked those of us wanting to celebrate his life to do so with private prayers for a safe and happy world for his and our own descendants. Cards and letters of condolence for the family may be sent to Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, OK, 73008, or electronic messages left by signing the guest book under the Obituaries link at www.mercer-adams.com.
