Obituary

Bobbie Merrill Neighbors was born to Arley V. and Helen Maude (Elliott) Merrill on the 2nd of August 1916, in Oregon, Missouri. She died peacefully on the 24th of February 2011, in Longview, Texas. Christened Emma Catherine, she was always known as Bobbie. She grew up in Marshall, Texas, and graduated from Marshall High School in 1932. After working and saving her money for four years in the depths of the depression, she attended Bethany-Peniel College in Bethany, Oklahoma (later renamed Southern Nazarene University), from which she graduated in 1940. After college, she taught school for a couple of years in Drummond, Oklahoma--eight elementary grades in a one-room schoolhouse. During her sojourn in Drummond, she met a mathematics teacher in Enid, Oklahoma, High School named Lloyd Neighbors. They were married in June 1942, after Lloyd had been drafted into military service. As the wife of a career Air Force officer, she lived in several places in the USA, from California to Alabama, and in Okinawa. Bobbie was known to her family and her many friends as loving, highly intelligent, hospitable, and generous. Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Helen Merrill Goulden, and her husband, Darrell; and a brother, Bill Merrill, and his wife, Margaret. She is survived by a son, Lloyd Neighbors, Jr. and his wife, Mary Lok, of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Ruth Neighbors, of New York City, and Mark Neighbors and his wife, Christina Chong, of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Sue Merrill, of Marshall, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Merrill, and his wife Vanita, of Norman, Oklahoma; three nieces--Amy Weber and her husband, Troy, of Yukon, Oklahoma; Diane Shade and her husband, Fred, of Arlington, Texas; and Debbie Merrill, of Arlington, Texas; six nephews--Ted Goulden and his wife, Daisy, of Yukon, Oklahoma; Arley Goulden and his wife, Esther, of Marshall, Texas; Robert Goulden and his wife, Fran, of Marshall, Texas; David Goulden and his wife, Karen, of Hallsville, Texas; Bill Merrill, Jr., of Arlington, Texas; and Mark Merrill, of Marshall, Texas; many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a few great-great nieces and nephews. Viewing will be 9am-9pm Saturday with the family receiving visitors from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service. Services will be Sunday, March 6, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
