Beverly Winifred Huff Crawford
She was born Joan Hoefer on February 27, 1928 in Hobart, Oklahoma. On October 26, 1928 she was adopted by William Warner Huff also of Hobart, Oklahoma. Upon adoption Huff changed her name to Beverly Winifred Huff. Huff had already raised two children but now somehow found himself as a single father to Beverly. He took her on trips to Texas and several trips out west across the desert to California to visit his other children who had moved out there with their mother as Okies. Beverly said they went all up and down the west coast several times. She loved swimming in the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. She loved her father!
Beverly attended the First Baptist Church in Hobart. At age 12, she made her profession of faith in Jesus Christ as personal savior and was baptized by Dr. George Boston. She sang in various singing groups in church and school.
Tragedy struck in the fall of 1941 when Beverly was only 13! After her father took his own life, Beverly was taken in by a loving, widowed housekeeper named Dorothy Sealy under the guidance of a hand-picked legal guardian named Charles Carder. Dorothy and her daughter, Faye, became the only mother and sister she would ever know. Beverly continued to care for Dorothy as her mother until she passed away in 1985.
Beverly was able to continue her education in Hobart. Beverly graduated high school in 1946 having been elected Football queen her senior year! She did the Charleston and Jitterbug in a large banquet hall above the Hobart Fire Station. She was a good student and loved to dance in high school!
Beverly enrolled in Oklahoma Baptist University in September 1946 where she was soon introduced to Ralph Crawford, a World War II veteran from Nowata, OK. Young Ralph saw her standing in line and told a friend hed like to meet Beverly. The friend went immediately and got Beverly and introduced the two. In only a few weeks, they both knew they had found their life partner!
Ralph and Beverly married in Ralphs home town of Nowata at the First Baptist Church. It was a double wedding with Ralphs little brother, Ray, on a Sunday morning before Sunday School. Pastor Alvin Hedin conducted the ceremony.
After the wedding, the two returned to OBU in Shawnee so they could finish school where Beverly was runner up for the Home Coming Queen.
When Ralphs preaching ministry began, Beverly started teaching junior girls in Sunday School and helping with Training Union and Girls Auxiliary.
In 1949, she officially became a preachers wife when they moved to Enid, Oklahoma to accept the pastorate of the Trinity Baptist Church. It was while in Enid that Ralph junior was born in 1951. In 1954, the family moved to Ryan, Oklahoma to pastor the First Baptist Church so Ralph would be closer to Southwestern Seminary where he finished school.
They moved to Ada, Oklahoma in 1957 and, while serving the Trinity Baptist Church, their son, Craig, was born in May of 1958. They lived in Ada just over five years then received a call to move to the First Southern Baptist Church of Dell City. In 1964, they were called to Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City where Ralph was pastor for 25 years.
Beverly was an exemplary preachers wife. Always displayed a pleasant attitude and had a kind word. She was always supportive and always in attendance by my Ralphs side through what turned out to be over 60 years of full time ministry.
She was always a fulltime mother but when the boys were a little older she worked for Walt Durham TV and Dr. E. T. Smiley Optometrist. She then worked for several years as receptionist for Dr. William Cleaver until retirement in the early 1990s.
Even in retirement Beverly accompanied Ralph on hundreds of trips to churches in and out of town where he filled in as interim pastor. It just wasnt like them to be apart for any reason. In fact, they were married for 71 years and 10 months.
As a mother she cooked and cleaned non-stop. She took her boys to stores like CR Anthonys and Boys Incorporated twice a year for school and Easter clothes and shoes.
She often said she lived in a boys dorm, but she made the most of it. Beverly learned to golf! She took lessons and played with the family and with Ralph many times. She even became a Yankees fan and became familiar with the players names in the 1990s. She endured snakes, turtles, dogs, hamsters and fish.
Beverly was a very proud and loving Grandmother to Christopher and Taylor. Sadly, she did not get to know her great-grandsons Cooper and Jake. She loved her family.
She loved everything about Jesus. Anytime Ralph would ask what he should preach on the answer was always Jesus. Her favorite quote was "Gods love is so perfect that we cant do anything bad to make him love us less, nor anything good to make him love us more."
She was preceded in death by her father, William W. Huff, in 1941, her guardian mother, Dorothy Yarbrough Sealy, in 1985, and Dorothy's daughter, Faye, in1952.
She is survived by husband, Ralph A. Crawford Sr.; son, Ralph Crawford Jr., son, Craig A. Crawford; daughters-in-law, Laura and Gwyn, all of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher Crawford of Florida, Taylor Winzeler and her husband, John, and Elizabeth Hope Compton of Oklahoma City and her great grandsons, Cooper and Jake Winzeler, also of Oklahoma City. Viewing with family present will be Wednesday, 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Thursday, June 14, 10:00am at Olivet Baptist Church with interment in Rose Hill Burial Park.
