Betty Jean Shields Wayman "Its a wonderful, wonderful life when you know the LORD above!" Betty Jean Shields Wayman passed away on December 4, 2017 at the age of 88 in Bethany, OK. Family visitation will be Thursday, 7-8:30pm at Resurrection Free Methodist Church, 6000 North MacArthur in OKC. Funeral services will be on Friday, December 8, at 12:00 noon at the Resurrection Free Methodist Church. Burial will be at New Home Cemetery in Nash about 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Hugh & Betty Wayman Ministerial Scholarship fund, c/o Free Methodist Foundation, 8050 Spring Arbor Road, Spring Arbor, MI 49283. Betty Jean Shields Wayman was born March 20, 1929 on a farm near Sand Creek, the second of three daughters of Joseph Lambert Bacil Shields and Mildred Abbie Lowe Shields. Betty attended school in Jet except for her senior year when she graduated from high school while simultaneously completing her first year of college at Central Christian College. Betty majored in Christian Education and also took classes at Asbury University. Betty was married to Hugh D. Wayman on June 6, 1947 in Enid, Oklahoma, recently celebrating 70th anniversary in 2017 with a reception and family reunion. They were blessed with five children: Jeannette, Dennis, Joy, Danny and Dale. The first three were born while she and her husband cared for the Green Valley Church near Alva, Oklahoma. The two youngest were born while Betty and her husband planted the Midwest City Free Methodist Church. She was a life-long Free Methodist and a Deaconess. Betty volunteered for 50 years as a charter member of the Auxiliary of Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City, serving as a volunteer chaplain. Betty ministered in the church in many capacities, including four years on the denominations Sunday School Board, where she provided creative and wise leadership, and as delegate to the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the Free Methodist Church. She was chairperson of the Oklahoma Historical Committee of the Oklahoma Annual Conference. Betty was a writer, artist, soloist and taught all ages from the youngest children to adults. An avid reader, she was known for her witty and informed observations. Co-laborers for 41 years in ministry in the Free Methodist Church, Betty and Hugh pastored churches in Kentucky and Oklahoma, as well as serving as the Oklahoma Conference Superintendent for 15 years. The Oklahoma FMC churches were: Green Valley, Bethel, Midwest City, Sallisaw, Wright Memorial, and OKC First Free Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her two sisters, Mable Shields Cook and Doris Shields Whatley. Betty is survived by her husband, Hugh and her five children: Jeannette (Frank) Meitz of Florida, Dennis (Cheryl) Wayman of California, Joy (Mike) Wilson of Washington, Danny (Melissa) Wayman of Oklahoma and Dale (Karyn) Wayman of Indiana. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends who will all miss her.
