Obituary

Our beloved Betty Jo Vanderford passed away on March 24, 2010. Betty was born on March 29, 1924 in Ponca City, OK to Waymon and May Holloway. She graduated from Ponca City High School and later attended Oklahoma City University. Upon graduation from high school during WWII, she went to work as a Rosie the Riveter for the Boyer Mfg. Company in Ponca City and later Douglas Aircraft Company in Midwest City to help in the war effort. Betty had a great love for her country. On her 20th birthday in 1944, she enlisted in the Womens Army Corps. She completed basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, GA and was eventually assigned to Camp Carson, CO where she worked as a stock record clerk. She met and married her husband, Lt. John H. Vanderford while stationed at Camp Carson. They returned to Okla. City in July 1952 where John set up a CPA practice. Betty was an active PTA volunteer and Girl Scout leader as their daughter was growing up. After her husbands death in 1972 she divided her time between her grandchildren, church and work. Betty retired from Reserve National Insurance Company in 1990. She was active in the Methodist Church all her life and could always be found helping out in the Crown Heights Methodist Church kitchen or wherever else she was needed. She was a member of Amity Circle and served in several capacities with the United Methodist Women. She was an extremely kind and caring person. Betty was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, sisters Virgie & Margie, and brother Pete. She is survived by her daughter Carol and husband Steve Barrymore of Oklahoma City; grandson John Barrymore and his wife, Steph and great-granddaughter Delaney of Los Angeles, CA and granddaughter Stephanie Barrymore of Oklahoma City; brother Fred Holloway and his family; sister Iva Mae Holloway of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom she cared about deeply. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff at Baptist Village Retirement Center and the caregivers from Valir Hospice for the care she received. Viewing will be at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, on Friday with the family receiving friends from 6-8pm. A private family interment at Memorial Park will precede her memorial service. The memorial service will be held for Betty at Crown Heights United Methodist Church at 2:30pm on Saturday, March 27, 2010.
