Obituary

Betty Jean Nichols, 90, peacefully passed away March 14, 2020 in Bethany. A member of the Bethany High School Hall of Honor, Betty dedicated her life to serving the Bethany community through education and volunteer service. She was a fixture in the community as the secretary at Bethany High School for decades. Upon retirement, she then spent years volunteering at Bethany Hospital and the Red Cross. Born in 1930 to Bertrum Musselman and Mary Alice Payne, Betty was the youngest of 14 children. She grew up in Tangier, Oklahoma and Larned, Kansas. She was raised on and helped work the family farm morning and night, all while attending a one-room schoolhouse that she walked 1 miles to and from every day. Her family, the Musselmans, had legendary family reunions across the years and stayed close through tragedy and triumph. Betty and husband Vestal, who preceded her in death in 2005, were married for 58 years. Betty and Vestal loved taking vacations, cheering on their kids and grandkids at ballgames, and being very involved in the Nazarene Church. Bettys son, Billy Nichols, preceded her in death in 2007. Betty is survived by her son, Mike (wife Diane) Nichols and daughter, Judy (husband Terry) Rowland; grandchildren, Billy (wife Tara) Nichols, Bobby (wife Valerie) Nichols, Toby (wife Jennifer) Rowland, Amy (husband Jody) Franke, Skipper (wife Christa) Rowland, Nicki Flatley, Penny (husband Jamie) Johnson, and a multitude of loving great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Needless to say, Bettys family tree is bountiful and will carry on her proud legacy for generations to come. Betty Nichols was dignified, compassionate, patient, giving, gentle and kind. She knew the meaning of hard workbut make no mistake about itfamily was her life. The city of Bethany, Bethany High School, her friends, her church congregation and her family were all impacted and made immeasurably better by Betty Nichols, a woman who came from so little, but gave so much.
