Obituary

Barbara Rose Summer, wife, mother, grandmother, lover of children, teens, and all people, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on March 10, 2018. She was born on January 15, 1936, to William and Dorothy Miller in West Des Moines, Iowa. In 1954, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Carl Summer on June 1, 1957, at the Meridian Park Church of the Nazarene. In 1961, she received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Bethany Nazarene College (Southern Nazarene University). Barbara was a Pastors Wife for 27 years in the USA and 26 months in Trinidad, Tobago. She was the first lady of the Southwest Oklahoma District for 22 years. Over the years she served tirelessly in so many capacities: in the boys and girls and teen camps as counselor, preparing the campgrounds for church camps, as office administrator and cook at the church daycare, and in any area where help was needed. For many years she served in various responsibilities on the District such as the NMI President, Womens Ministry, and District Office Assistant. Barbara had a servants heart and had the gift of seeing a need and filling it. She was a precious Saint of God and loved people unconditionally with her whole heart. Having been on Southwest Oklahoma District since December of 1959, she became Aunt Barbara and Grandma Barbara to hundreds of children and teens. One of the favorite memories of so many people is when one of the teens at youth camp took her wig off her head as he ran by. She believed that if you know Jesus, it makes you better to people, never better than anybody. Because of that belief, she was able to enjoy people and have fun with them even at her own expense. Her grandchildren never let her forget that she was THEIR OWN Grammy! She prayed for them, played games with them, teased them, and loved them with her whole heart! One of her final statements the day before she passed away is that her deepest hearts desire was to always do what God wanted her to do. Her final entry in her prayer journal was, "Father, my prayer today is to help me love you more deeply than ever before in my life. Let me desire You more than anything in my life. I want to be intimate with you controlled by You in every attitude, word, and action. Psalm 56:13 AMP For You have delivered my life from death, yes and my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life and of the living. " She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carl, and their two daughters, Cheryl Rains (Ralph) and Renae Fowler (Terry); six beloved grandchildren: Michael Rains (Kerri), Matthew Rains (Lee), Mark Rains (Bethany), Ashlee Jacoby (Michael), Chris Waldrop (Emily), and Sky Fowler; four great grandchildren: Aliya and Michael Ben Jacoby, Amelia Rains, and Corinne Rains; her sister: Marilynn Sellers, and extended family: Rose and Shadrack Diop.
