Obituary

Avonelle Marie McHenry, 98, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2019, three days shy of her 99th birthday. Born in New Boston, TX on August 17, 1920, Avonelle was the 2nd oldest of 10 children. As a teen, she moved from Texas to Broken Bow, OK with her parents and siblings to establish a farm where family would continue to gather for several generations. She married George B. McHenry in 1942 in Broken Bow, starting their life together which would take them to Pasedena, TX, Oklahoma City, and Bethany, OK. After George's death, she moved to Austin, TX and finally to Colorado where she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Carolyn. Avonelle is survived by sisters, Mary Helen McAlexander, Dallas, TX, Ouida Frances Stacy, Starke, FL, Clara Louise Stephens, Bethany, OK; daughter, Rebecca Smith (Jim) of Lago Vista, TX; daughter-in-law, Carolyn McHenry; four grandchildren and their spouses: G.B. McHenry (Ashley) of Pueblo West, CO, Dustin Robinson (Anna) of Washington, D.C., Beau Robinson (Namiraa) of Washington, D. C., Max Robinson (Amanda) of Austin, TX; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Artie B. and Vida Marie Pace; husband, George B. McHenry Sr.; son, George B. McHenry, Jr.; brothers, Artie B. Pace Jr., Hiram Jones Pace, Little Thomas Pace (infant); sisters, Cornelia Suenram, Nina Clarice Monroe, Billie Doris Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Bill Leeper, Guy Keyser, Les Suenram, J.P. McAlexendar, Porter Monroe, Leo Mitchell, William Stacy, and Harold Stephens II. Special thanks to Carolyn, who cared for Avonelle the final years of her life. Avonelle referred to Carolyn as her "best friend" rather than a daughter-in-law. Avonelle was a unique and talented woman who many said, "could do anything." Special thanks to the staff of Belmont Senior Care in Pueblo, CO, especially Abby who went above and beyond caring for Avonelle and Hospice CNA, Karen, who spent many hours with Avonelle, talking about her life and crocheting. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Mercer-Adams Funeral Home, 3925 N. Asbury Ave., Bethany, OK, followed by graveside services at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery, 7801 N.W. Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK 73132.
