Audrey McKinnis Rice, 89, of Warr Acres, devoted wife of Versel Rice, went to heaven on October 2, 2011. Audrey was born August 31, 1922 in Edmond, Oklahoma to Frank and Anna McKinnis. She graduated from Piedmont Schools and Draughon Business College. She worked as secretary for more than ten years for the Department of Agriculture at the state capitol. She married Versel Rice on August 24, 1941 at Hopewell Baptist Church. They made their home on the farm. They had two children, Jan and Lee. She was a faithful wife, devoted homemaker and a constant companion to Versel as he worked the farm. In 1965, they moved to OKC. She attended Central State College (now University of Central Oklahoma) and graduated with a double major, Bachelors of Science in English and Business. She graduated in three years with high honors. Putnam City West opened in 1968 and she began her teaching career. She prepared her students with the life skill of secretarial training, typing and shorthand for 20 years.
Audrey was a long-time, active member of Tulakes Baptist Church for 45 years. She enjoyed helping others, sewing, attending musicals and concerts, and traveling to six of the seven continents. She had a stroke in 2006 but continued being positive throughout the years of struggles. We couldnt hear her voice but we knew she was listening and wanted to help. Jan and Dan moved in with Mom and Dad to provide care. Lee worked the ranch, yet he and Vivian were only a phone call away.
Special thanks to 9 year old, honorary pallbearer, Jett Boyd. His weekly, Sunday visits brightened up her day. She is reunited in Heaven with her husband, Versel, parents, Frank and Anna McKinnis, and sister, Hazel Gilmore. She is survived by daughter and best girlfriend, Jan Lack and husband Dan; son, Lee and wife Vivian; five grandchildren: Gerald and Jana Clark, Kathy Dudley, Kerry and Christy Rice, Joe and Kristi Rice, Joy and Jason Filer; six very special great-grandchildren: Zachary Clark, Heaven Clark, Danielle Dudley, Tyler Rice, Jed Rice, and Cameron Rice.
