Alfred LaVerne Vaughn passed away at the age of 88 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. LaVerne (LV) was born to Lillie Myrtle and Hugh Patrick Vaughan in Harmon, Oklahoma. He spent his early adult years working in the newspaper business as a circulation and district manager. He moved his family from OKC to Santa Fe, New Mexico after being recruited to become their Circulation Manager at the Santa Fe New Mexican. LaVerne was then recruited to Independence, Missouri to work at the Independence Examiner as Circulation Manager. He eventually worked his way back to Oklahoma City and worked for the Oklahoma Journal.
After retiring from the newspaper business, LaVerne became most known for Vaughn Excavating Company. Starting with a single backhoe, he grew it into a family run, full service, excavation and construction company, being well-known and respected in the Oklahoma City area. He worked tirelessly for many years with his youngest son Dwight, teaching him the tricks of the trade as they worked together. He worked tirelessly to ensure things ran smoothly and professionally to support his family. Regardless of how busy he was, he always had time to follow and support his oldest son DeWayne, in his pursuit of playing Major League Baseball.
LaVerne and Judith, his devoted wife of 27 years, enjoyed their life together filled with travel, fine dining and socializing while entertaining friends and family at their home. Despite the heat, their annual Fourth of July, barbecue and pool party was always a great time for all family and friends. LV always looked forward to it because of out of state friends and family attending. He also appreciated the efforts of Merle Elrod who did all the cooking!
In addition, they spent the past several years enjoying life and working at their farm. LV enjoyed clearing fields, baling hay and tending to the "pets", his Hereford cattle. For several years this allowed him the luxury of continuing his passion of working outdoors while also getting to operate his heavy equipment. LaVerne was the hardest working man in the room, but always had the time for his boys and grandchildren. LaVerne stayed tough during his battle with cancer as he wanted to be there to take care of Judith.
A sincere thank you goes out to Rosa, who bent over backwards as a caregiver and friend both to LV and Judith. A big thanks to Roy, who took LV to the farm daily and did numerous tasks for him repairing equipment, baling hay and chauffeuring him around town. In addition, Shekita, Stephanie and the other fine folks at Legend Assisted Living on Council in OKC as well as, Sharece and Charlie at Valir Hospice for their unconditional care and love of LaVerne during his final weeks.
In conclusion, without comparison, there was no greater care and love given to LaVerne than by his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Vaughn. Hour upon hour, day after day, she had the time, patience and energy to tend to LaVerne in his times of need. He loved her like his own daughter.
LaVerne was predeceased by his parents, Lillie and Hugh Vaughan; siblings, JP Vaughan, Delora Beck, Gwendolyn Long and grandson, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, Judith Denney Vaughn, her son Richard Page, spouse Tania Page and their daughter, Kornela Mitus; her daughter Penny Reitveld, spouse Marty and their children: Jamie and Stephanie Rioux, Jennifer Bigelow, Krista Nixon, Austin, Martin and Lucas Reitveld; her daughter Deborah Williams, spouse Grant and their children: Taylor, Morgan and Griffen Williams.
LaVerne is survived by his sister, Dorothy Snow, his son DeWayne Vaughn and spouse, Kimberly; his grandchildren Victoria and Derek Vaughn; his son Dwight Vaughn; his grandchildren Kevin and Kaleb, and great grandson, Devin Vaughn. Two others of importance, who LV thought of as sons, Merle Elrod and Chris Harris.
Alfred LaVerne Vaughn never once met a stranger! He will be remembered forever in our hearts as an honest, hardworking, loyal and caring husband, father and friend.
