Lucille Brauer, 86, born Oct. 5, 1933, in Terral, Oklahoma, died Oct. 15, 2019, in Oklahoma City, after a rapid decline associated with Parkinsons disease. She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Alexander Beck; brother, Floyd William Beck; sister, Naomi Beatrice Brown; mother Ora Betty "Bea" Robinson; cherished grandson, Christopher E. Brauer; and beloved husband of 65 years, Walter. She is survived by son, Steven Brauer, and wife Barbara, of Oklahoma City; and daughter, Valerie Pautsch, and husband, Roger, of rural Canadian County; and many nieces and nephews across the country.
Lucille wasnt a scholar in the academic sense, but she was well-spoken, articulate, refined, insightful and very wise. She loved birds and butterflies, music and flowers, and enjoyed creating a warm and inviting home for her family and friends. Lucille had a great sense of style and was a skilled seamstress. Her creativity was perhaps most visible in the clothes she made with meticulous effort for herself as well as Valerie, who wore terrific "mom-made" clothes through her high-school years.
Lucilles mother was a homemaker; her father worked the oilfields of south-central Oklahoma and north Texas. The family moved often, following the work, living in trailers or tiny rental homes. Her father died in a tragic car accident when she was only 11 years old. She carried the heartbreak of that loss for the rest of her life. His untimely death altered the familys direction in dramatic ways. Widowed at 33, Bea became a beautician to earn income to support her family.
Lucille graduated from Terral High School and met Walter E. Brauer, of Prague, Okla., who had returned from military service and was working as a lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. They married in June 1952, established a home in Duncan, where the first of their two children was born.
Lucille was a woman of deep and steadfast faith, serving God and others in many roles, often in the local Baptist churches in each community where she lived. As her husbands career advanced, the family moved to Duncan, Enid (where their second child was born), Elk City, Ardmore and Bethany, where they established their final residence in 1966.
Lucilles involvement in community and ministry included serving as a den mother for her sons Cub Scout troop; directing vacation Bible school; teaching Sunday school classes; co-leading a Brownie group of girl scouts; hosting worship services in her home for a struggling group of disenfranchised Baptists, to name just a few.
When Walt retired, they began to travel rather extensively across the continental United States and marveled at the wonders of nature as well as urban cityscapes.
Their only grandchild was born in 1985, and a new chapter of life began. As grandparents of a child with complex health concerns, Lucille and Walt looked for ways ease the pressures Christopher and his parents faced on a daily basis. Lucille became a primary caregiver, enabling Barbara to continue employment and critical healthcare benefits for nearly a year. For both Walt and Lucille, these were precious times and no sacrifice was too great. Lucille was no stranger to sacrifice. It was characteristic of Lucille and Walt to think of others first and to do whatever was in their power to make things better.
When her mothers health became precarious, Lucille moved into Beas home in Yukon and cared for her until she died some seven months later. It was not the life she planned, but devotion to her mother helped her face this adversity with the same resolve and faith that had sustained her through other hardships.
Advancing age and health concerns required additional lifestyle adjustments for Walt and Lucille, and they moved to an assisted living community in October 2014, where Walt lived until his death in 2017. In their own ways, they each left their marks on the lives of other residents as well as staff with each interaction. They built a legacy of civility, consideration and kindness that wont be soon forgotten.
The family wishes to commend the compassionate staff of Good Shepherd Hospice for ensuring a better quality of life in Lucilles final days.
