Life Legacy

"Cowboy Wayne" Betterton, 70, passed away October 19, 2012 with his family by his side. Wayne was born to Howard Wayne and Lola Agnes Betterton on November 22, 1941 in Claremore Oklahoma. Wayne was one of four brothers, Virgil (Pete), Gary (Baldy), Floyd (Gene), and three sisters, Pheobe (Bunnie), Roberta (Bobby) and Peggy.
Wayne enlisted in the Navy in 1958, and was stationed in California, where he met his first wife, Margaret (Maggie), with whom he had one beautiful daughter, Deborah, and three wonderful sons, Keith, Kevin and Skeeter (Howard Wayne III). After being discharged from the Navy in 1965, they moved to Nowata, Oklahoma and eventually nestled into Oklahoma City where Wayne learned and mastered the trade of a cement mason. His skilled hands touched many of the buildings centrally located in the Oklahoma metro and surrounding areas. When he was not working tirelessly, he enjoyed spending the weekends at Arbuckle Lake with his brothers and sisters and their families, water skiing and teaching the kids to ski.
Wayne met his second wife, Lou Dale (Nikki), married in 1985, with whom he had another wonderful son, Scott Allan. He continued his masonry skills throughout their marriage, enjoyed watching football games and playing pool at local establishments, and visiting with great friends and family.
Wayne married Deeanna in June of 1996, and resided in Cashion Oklahoma. He enjoyed the beautiful country, helping around the farm, fishing in the family pond with his brothers and sons, teaching his grandsons how to play in the dirt and learning how to fish. He was always entertaining friends and family in the barn. He skillfully tackled crossword puzzles with little effort and loved a playful game of football history, "Pappy knows the answer to this OU question?"
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Maggie; and sister, Bobby. He is survived by his precious great-granddaughter, Adelia Rose; ten grandchildren, Mark Allen, Jackson, Annemarie, Seth, Shelby, Sienna, Whittney, Alyssa Brown and husband Austin, Dylan and Tyler; his daughter, Debi Gomez of Mustang OK; four sons, Keith Betterton and wife Cathy, Kevin Betterton and wife Kerri, Skeeter Betterton and Scott Betterton of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Peggy Okerland of Brandon MN, Pheobe Lucille Clark and husband Larry of Wichita KS; three brothers, Floyd Eugene Betterton and wife Deborah of Haven, KS, Gary Dean Betterton and wife Rita of Hutchinson, KS, and Virgil Lloyd and wife Trish of Enos, OK; many nieces and nephews; and dearly appreciated friends, Nikki Betterton of Oklahoma City and Deeanna Farland of Cashion, OK.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude of thanks to Nikki for holding us together at our unraveling moments and being such a wonderful and caring friend to Wayne, and to the staff at Platinum Hospice for their very skilled and most gentle care of our Pappy.
